How Turning my Home into a House… Unpacked Eternity In My Heart.

Recently, my husband and I have had to make some serious decisions. We have felt God calling us to step into a new ministry. This new step is requiring us to uproot our family, home, jobs, ministry and comforts in order to obey. Needless to say, this has brought some BiG changes for our whole family. We are currently living in a transition mode.

For the last 10 ½ years our family has lived in the same home and community. We planted a church a little over five years ago and are deeply invested in our community. But when God spoke to us earlier this year, we knew that obedience wasn’t optional. This was something that, if we didn’t obey, we would be in outright disobedience and live in regret for the rest of our lives.
Confidently excited and yet filled with  fear of the unknown, we took the plunge and jumped ALL IN.

What I didn’t realize, is how much we were already “ALL IN” in our current lives. . A few days ago I had a realtor come to my home to do a walk-through prior to it being placed on the market. The first thing she said to me was, “You need to turn your home into a house.”  Those words hit me like a ton of bricks. Turn my home into a house? WHAT!!???My WHOLE life I have taken houses and turned them into homes; but NEVER have I turned a home into a house?!

Immediately I knew, this statement meant more than just a strategy to sell our home. God was using it to speak to my heart. I could feel the Holy Spirit gently nudging me. What else in my life was I holding on to like this was my home? Comforts, habits, relationships, possessions, the list was endless…. It was like I had packed away years of trinkets and treasures to hold and keep, as if I would be here FOREVER. I knew in that moment that this transition I’m now walking, is more about preparing for eternity, than another house, I will call a home.

What about you? When was the last time you took an inventory of your “spiritual” boxes? What have you physically or spiritually packed away, stored or held on to over the years ( treasures & trinkets) as if this is your forever home?

I know now why Jesus said, “The son of Man has nowhere to lay his head.” (Matthew 8:20b). Jesus never made this world his home. He kept it a house to reflect his Father until he went “Home”. He commanded us, “Do not store up treasures on earth where moth and dusty destroy, but store up treasures in heaven.” (Matthew 6:19). He had to know we would be tempted to get comfortable, relaxed, and distracted by what this world has to offer.

I don’t know about you but I want to be the type of Christian that lives in this world as if it’s my house. I want to live, breathe, and exist fulfilling my Father’s purpose while I wait ( in transition)  to go to my “Eternal Home.” Isn’t it time we unpack our grip on this world and start filling our storage unit in heaven!
